Hornby R3770 | GWR Class 43 HST "First & Last" | Model Train Pack | OO Gauge | Review | HD
Here is the final OO gauge model train review to come before Christmas 2020 and this one is a review of my second Hornby HST Train Pack. The train pack is the Hornby R3770 GWR Class 43 HST "First & Last" which are 43002 "Sir Kenneth Grange" and 43198 that is a named locomotive as well after some train drivers that must of worked for the train company in the past. 43198 is the last HST power car to be delivered in 1982 as the HST trains were built in 1976 to 1982 to replace older trains like the Class 52 Hydraulics on the GWML and the Class 55 Deltics on the ECML as well as to oust other older trains on the Midland Mainline and the WCML and Cross Country routes.
The HST was a very successful high speed diesel passenger train in its time and although they held a 40 year career on the front line. At the time this review video is published (December 2020). The only mainline HST's that are still in use are the East Midlands Railway that are still in operation but will be replaced in 2022. That aside, the HST's do live on with GWR as their "Castle" sets and shorter sets are in use with Scotrail. Cross Country Trains still use theirs on their longer routes although the Mk3 carriages are upgraded to power doors instead of slam type.
The model is superb in every way that I have seen from my observations and being a candid person. There is nothing negative to say against this model train pack from Hornby. The powered locomotive has a powerful all wheel drive with a central can motor and the performance is very smooth as well. Both models are DCC ready with the 8 pin input for a decoder of your choice and yes you will need two for full control because both locomotives have directional lighting and cab lighting as well. There are metal etched nameplates supplied as well and these will be installed when this pack is opened on Christmas Day of 2020 :).
In truth, this is a well thought out pack from Hornby and being a GWR fan is the reason I got this one for my own Christmas present and the next review to come of a model train will be on Boxing day and will be the absolute final model train review that will see the end of 2020. Not that 2020 has been a particularly good year to be honest for most of us. However I am optimistic about 2021 and may there be great things ahead for all of us.
