For FoG specifically, we chose scenarios so as not to have to deal with the difficulties of having no ability to hide units or make force comps/deploys secret. To play, you need to make a copy of your mp scenario folder in your FoG2/multiplayer/(dlc) and place it in your FoG2/campaigns folder. It will appear as a duplicate entry in your Epic Battles selection. Enable hotseat in fog options, invite your friend to play, and that's it.
If you do choose to play custom battles this way, accepting the lack of hiding, and trusting to the honor system to not look during comp and deploy, just make sure to open advanced options during scenario generation to set the points to even amounts.
