House by the Lake | Through the Woods, Introduction [Hallo-stream]
In the beginning of Through the Woods, the protagonist (a mother) is working while staying at a lake house with her son, Espen. She wakes up to find him missing and arrives just in time to see someone taking her son across the lake with a boat. (Streamed on Halloween 2016 as part of my 24-hour Hallo-stream.)

Through the Woods was developed by ANT∀GONIST Games and published by 1C Publishing EU on 27 October 2016 with great anticipation. It is the story of a mother who's lost her child and the lengths she will go to (both literally and metaphorically) to find and save him from dangers—in our world or another.
The game is played in a third person over-the-shoulder (3OTS) perspective, making hiding somewhat easier, as the player can see more of what's going on than with a first person game. The typical W, A, S, and D are used for movement, and LMB is your flashlight (only in the dark) which apparently has no limit on battery life. Moving the mouse around makes the mother look, holding L-Ctrl crouches (releasing makes you stand), and L-Shift makes her run. There is no jump, and E interacts (opens doors, reads text, etc.). Although occasional invisible walls (or no-walk textures / objects) slightly stymie immersion and free exploration, most direction within the game feels natural.
Do you remember the feeling of the forest when you were a child? All the fear and mystery from roaming through it alone, coupled with a thoughtful story and quality sound design, make immersion in the game easy. As any mother would, the protagonist begins a desperate search for her boy. But the woods are from a different realm, strange, abandoned, and full of dangers. Can she survive, and will she find Espen? Let's play Through the Woods and see.
