How Can Nier Be Both A Great and Terrible Game?
8This is a critique of Nier. This video is mainly trying to work through my feelings of how Nier can simultaneously be a great and a terrible video game. I think it has a lot to do with the essence of what a game is, and how that can be different than the sum of its parts.
I explain my frustrations with the combat and the separate endings, but marvel about the sense of spectacle and earnestness that the game manages to create. I grew attached to these characters and shared in both their triumph and despair. In the end I don't know if I was adequately able to express myself, but I feel I got most of the way there.
