Epic Games invited IGN’s Ben and Jeffery to take a tour of their multi-million dollar virtual set, they call the volume. So check us out as we play with the same video wall technology they use to shoot TV shows like The Mandalorian.

If you’ve games like Fortnite or that Matrix demo from 2021, then you’re familiar with Epic Games Unreal Engine 5. It’s a game dev tool usually used for video game development, but the folks at Epic have developed new technology, which they call the Volume, to use for Movie and TV Visual Effects (VFX). This volume technology is the same VFX technology used in the Star Wars show, The Mandalorian. If you’ve seen any “behind the scenes,” “making of,” or “VFX breakdown” of The Mandalorian, that’s Epic’s Volume technology in action!

Before Epic let Ben and Jeffery shoot a scene using this VFX technology, they got to sit down and talk to creatives like Baz Idoine (Director of Photography on The Mandalorian), Todd Cherniawsky (Production Designer), and Miles Perkins (Industry Manager, Film & Television at Epic Games) to talk about UE5 and what CGI could be created with the Unreal Engine 5 graphic capabilities.
