Imagine you're on the solar system's outskirts, standing on Pluto's icy surface at –380°F (–229°C), looking up at the sky. In that dark immensity, a star shines with faint light: it's Alpha Centauri. This star system—the closest to ours—is approximately 4.367 light-years from the Sun. Pluto is one of the farthest bodies in the solar system, but does that mean it's significantly closer to Alpha Centauri than any other planet? What would the closest stars to our solar system look like if we were standing on Pluto's surface? In this video, we will answer that and other questions. Let's get started!

Before we let our imaginations run wild, we need to clarify essential details about the units of measurement used in the universe. On Earth, we usually measure the distance from one city to another in kilometers or miles. But those units are too small for space, where distances are enormous. If we were to use kilometers to measure distances between planets, the numbers would quickly become unmanageably large—difficult to write and tedious to read. That’s why astronomers use units better suited to cosmic scales: the Astronomical Unit (AU) and light-years.
