The cost to get a degree from SMU is actually closer to $270,000:
$72,000 x 2 = $144,000
$50,000 x 2 = $100,000
$3,300 x 8 = $26,400
Total: $270,400
1) Go to community college. You'll save on the most expensive half of university by doing so. Going to community college saved me $138,000!
2) Get Serious. Get your GPA up and join as many clubs as you can (especially honors or diversity clubs) to be the best candidate for college recruiters/the financial aid committee. This landed me an interview for a full tuition transfer scholarship ($125,000)!
3) Do not cheap out on application fees! I took a shot at SMU and they called me in for an interview!!
4) Debt is the enemy. Four ways to pay for your education are institutional aid, federal aid, state aid, and competitions.
5) Own your craft. No matter what your interests are or what you're majoring in, there are competitions awarding cash prizes for your education. I've received over $6,000 in competition earnings and am a finalist for two more worth $15,000 total.
6) Be hungry and be honest. Be transparent with your situations so those that can help you know how to help. Anytime a professor or financial aid advisor recommends a scholarship, grant, application, or competition, jump on it. That led to my two competition wins and an additional scholarship.
Bonus Tip: Get a job as early as you can. The extra money will help you pay for certain unforeseen instances that can later be reimbursed. It serves as a fail-safe to avoid getting a student loan.
