How I installed Win7 on MODERN HARDWARE (no bios tweaks or usb booting) (EASY GUIDE IN DESCRIPTION)
After you've seen me suffer through this a second time because I forgot what I was doing here is how to do this whole process THE EASY WAY.
This is NOT a difficult process, you simply have to know how to solve the two bugs, they're EASY. Piotr Barcz presents:
How to install Windows 7 on Modern Hardware
1. You need a computer that has a version of Windows on it. If the computer doesn't have windows on it then make a bootable USB drive of Windows 8 and install that. (setup takes approx. half an hour)
Get the Windows 8 ISO file from archive.org and use Rufus to make the drive.
2. Make the Windows 7 bootable USB drive with Rufus (get Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 [service pack 1] 64 bit ISO from archive.org too) and then plug the drive into the computer. Navigate to the USB drive in File Explorer and start the "setup.exe" file and let Windows do its thing.
3. FIRST BUG: Once the process stalls on "completing installation" in that list of checked off phases just press Shift F10 to open command prompt and type in "explorer.exe"
It'll open a little pop up window that says it's setting up different personalized settings or something like that. Let that run until it either stalls on the last personalized setting (probably explorer settings itself) or closes and doesn't do anything. Restart the computer.
4. When the computer starts again it'll throw a warning box error about the computer restarting unexpectedly or something like that.
Press shift f10 again to open the command prompt and copy (EXACTLY) this command:
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\ChildCompletion /v setup.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f
Press enter, then restart the computer, setup will finish and you will have your windows 7 PC running sans the ethernet driver.
5. To get ethernet working first go here and download the windows update installer:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4457144
(press on the third entry from the top to open a small pop out window and use the first download from the top out of the two links)
Install that and then once the update is done download the ethernet driver from the manufacturer's website (for my Dell I just searched dell ethernet driver windows 7 and first result got me the installer) and install that.
Boom. You're done. DO NOT install windows updates other than the ones needed to fix program install problems as the Dell just died a second time today because of the boot system being corrupted!
