According to the new posters for The Last of Us season 2, “Every Path Has a Price.” The road ahead—at long last!—also has a release date. The seven-episode season of HBO’s Emmy-awarded doomsday drama will premiere much sooner than we thought. The first episode hits HBO and Max on Sunday, April 13.
While Season One entertained us over nine episodes, Season Two is slightly shorter, with only seven episodes.
Considering we know that not all of the second game will be in the second season, the shorter episode count could indicate where the finale happens.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3], because we’re taking our time and [going] down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin said. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
Although season 2 will be shorter than The Last of Us’ debut season, which had nine episodes, Mazin teased that one season 2 episode is nice and long.
“There’s an episode that is going to be … I don’t know if I would say feature length but quite big [in length],” he said.
Just as season 1 is based on the 2013 video game “The Last of Us,” season 2 is an adaptation of the game’s sequel, “The Last of Us Part II.”
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
The surplus of material means that Mazin and Druckmann are hoping to make a third and fourth season, although HBO has yet to renew the show past season 2.
