How Powerful Is The Israeli Merkava Tank?
Israel has utilised American, British, French, and (captured) Soviet tanks extensively in the past, and the Merkava incorporates the finest features of each. The 1967 War served as a reminder of the importance of tank armour, so much so that Israeli designers prioritised tank survivability over armament and speed. In 1970, General Israel Tal took command of the tank development project, bringing with him the perspective of a seasoned professional soldier. The first Merkavas were built in 1978, and the new tank was put into service the year after that.
