14We’ve all done it, you go to clear out a box of childhood possessions only to spend several hours playing with and reminiscing over the items you find.
Unpacking is a zen game that simulates this experience and is aimed at providing meditative stress relief through unboxing objects and placing them into a new home. It also becomes a puzzle game as you attempt to meticulously organise and arrange the seemingly endless items, belongings and memorabilia you pull out of the boxes. This indie game is also highly praised for its incredibly deep emotional narrative, which is told entirely through environmental storytelling and has zero dialogue. You never even see the character you play with each item instead revealing a piece of their history, from their hobbies to personal relationships to significant life events. Each level takes place in a different year, starting with a typical 1990s childhood bedroom, before moving into a college dorm/university accommodation and finally moving into their first house. The result is a minimalist game with incredibly satisfying gameplay which will resonate with players on an emotional level through its journey exploring nostalgia, heartbreak, and achievements in life.
