On this episode of Your Geek Fix we will be interviewing feature film and game animator India Barnardo about all the tips, tricks, and tools necessary to become a character animator. India is presently an animator at Sony and has a long history of animation experience. She has worked on films like the Willoughbys and Leap (Ballerina), and games like Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time and Oddworld: Soulstorm. She has also completed a passion project named Cat and Moth (www.catandmoth.com) and recently presented with her international team at FMX. ►Below is additional information India provided us with for online learning and networking:
★ 11 Second Club - https://www.11secondclub.com/ - a fun free competition with a community to boot!
★ Jean-Denis Haas - https://twitter.com/jeandenishaas - this guy has a ton of free resources, teaches and does free collaborative competitions too! I recommend his youtube channel.
★ iAnimate - https://ianimate.net/ - A wide range of classes, levels and instructors
★ Animation Mentor - a popular online school, mostly pixar instructors, I believe.
★ Animsquad - https://www.animsquad.com/ - Disney instructors, a little more advanced compared to ianimate.
★ Animation Flow - My friend Alex runs this smaller school. These are good to get feedback on work you have already or currently working on, he's a great guy and works at Dreamworks. https://www.animationflow.com/
★ For festivals, when covid is over, I would suggest searching for festivals in you given area, even if they are predominantly live action movies they usually have an animation category or short films.
★ Last year a lot of the bigger animation networking ones went online, and I assume at least the first half of 2021 will be the same. I'd recommend keeping an eye on Annecy Animation Festival, CTNx, Lightbox expo, SIGGRAPH, FMX, Animex, Ottawa Animation Festival and Spark Animation Festival. Some of the festivals have a discord group too, like CTNx has a year-round discord group with talks and chats. There's an organisation called Bring Your Own Animation that sometimes has online gatherings and free critique sessions too.
