To create a table of contents, you need to make microsoft word recognize your titles, and you can do this by stylizing them by using the 'Styles' (such as Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3) found under the 'Home' tab. Once you've done this you are free to enter your table of contents by going to 'References' and clicking the 'Table of contents' button to the left. You can simply update the table of contents later on by clicking 'Update Table' found next to the table of contents button.
