How to Enable Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature [Tutorial]

With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced a new security feature called Tamper Protection that protects security settings for Windows Defender antivirus from being disabled by malware or third-party programs.

When enabled, Tamper Protection will only allow Windows Defender related settings to be changed when done through the Windows Security settings screen. If a program, such as malware, or even PowerShell tries to change security settings or Microsoft Defender preferences, Tamper Protection will block the settings from being modified.

Due to this, Tamper Protection is an integral part of the Windows 10 security environment and should be enabled by all users for increased security and protection from malicious programs.

On Windows 10, Windows Security is an experience that includes the settings to manage all of the built-in security features, including Windows Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, online security, and more.

Although this is a welcome addition that adds an extra layer of protection on Windows 10, it can cause some problems when you need to manage security settings through another app or command line tools, such as PowerShell or Command Prompt.

Fortunately, whether you want to improve your system security, or you're required to manage security settings using another app, the updated version of Windows Security makes it simple to enable or disable the new Tamper Protection feature.

According to Microsoft, Tamper Protection ” helps prevent malicious apps from changing important Windows Defender Antivirus settings, including real-time protection and cloud-delivered protection.” In other words, it makes it more difficult for malicious software running on your PC to disable real-time antivirus protection and other features.

You can still configure settings yourself via the Windows Security app. In fact, once you enable Tamper Protection, you shouldn’t notice anything different. That’s why we recommend enabling it.

Note that Tamper Protection only applies to Windows Security settings. If you’re using a third-party antivirus, it won’t protect that antivirus’s settings. Some third-party antivirus programs have similar built-in “tamper protection” features to protect their own settings, too.
