In the beginning I leave and re-enter the Hyrule Castle area because Malon doesn't appear if it turns to night while you're there unless you get caught by the guards during the night. When it turns to night go back to Castle Town Market and then back to Hyrule Castle to get Malon to appear without getting caught by the guards.

Try to follow my footsteps as best you can so that you don't get caught. Once you make your way over to Talon then wake him up with the Cucco that hatches from the egg at dawn, talk to him, and then move the milk crates to get into the hole in the side of the castle.
