Welcome to part 2 of Alfie Vaughan’s series on adding realistic depth of field to a VFX shot. In this tutorial, Alfie demonstrates how to achieve the next level of beauty and realism in a cinematic VFX shot.

Some VFX shots simply demand a higher level of focal finesse than what’s achievable with the 2D data from a depth pass. For these shots, industry VFX artists use 3D depth data, or “deep”, where every pixel in the image has its own individual 3D depth data. This allows you to achieve ultra-realistic focal depths.

Although deep data gives you perfect defocus, it is costly in terms of time and hard drive space, so it may not always be the first solution. But if you’re working on a shot that really needs precise focal depths, and the standard defocus toolset is not giving you the accuracy required, using deep data with Nuke’s bokeh node is the way to go.

This tutorial is available in Ultra HD.
