There are four ranks of can collector, the final being king of cans. When you reach the final rank you unlock an additional item from the shop which costs 500,000 eco points. If the map is empty you should usually hang around the back of the map and collect the lines of cans back there. Also you should always attempt to keep a boost at all times to protect yourself, however, if you see a good opportunity to smack down multiple opponents at the same time, that's usually a good time to use a boost and hit them all.
The girl with the trash bag pops up about two thirds of the way through the game. You should always play out the full can collection time limit so you can get the max cans possible. You get a bigger multiplier the more cans you finish with.
The girl that appears drops tons of cans. You want to try to follow her if possible and pick up all the cans. She drops hundreds of cans by the time she leaves.
As for the trash collector, it's not a big deal, you can usually slip by it in most streets. Also as for getting hit by your opponents, losing 50 cans is not a big deal, and most of the time you can slip right past them if you dodge them just right.
