How to Link an External Bank Account to Chime
Linking an external bank account to your Chime account allows you to move money in and out of Chime seamlessly, enabling direct transfers between financial institutions for bill payments, savings, and general money management. Chime partners with The Bancorp Bank and Stride Bank and offers modern mobile banking with no hidden fees. Connecting an outside account gives users more flexibility and control over their finances without needing to use cash or checks.
To start, open the Chime mobile app on your smartphone. If you haven't already, download it from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Once the app is open, tap the 'Log In' button and enter your registered email address and password. After successfully signing in, navigate to the "Move Money" section. This is Chime’s hub for transferring funds, whether you're adding money, setting up direct deposit, or linking external bank accounts.
Look for the option labeled "Linked Accounts" within the Move Money menu. Tap on this, and you’ll be prompted to add a new external account. Chime typically partners with Plaid, a secure service that lets you log in to your other bank directly from the app. If your bank supports Plaid, simply enter your banking credentials when prompted. If not, you can manually link the bank by entering the routing number and checking or savings account number.
Once you've entered your information, Chime may perform a verification process—this could be instant for Plaid-supported banks or may involve two small test deposits for manual verification. After the external account is verified, it will appear as a transfer option in your Chime app. You can then initiate transfers between your Chime account and the external account anytime.
