The 3 sizes that you should use for your youtube thumbnail is either 1920x1080,1280x720, or 640x360. They all have a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Always remember KISS Keep It Simple Stupid when you are creating youtube thumbnial. The simpler the custom youtube thumbnail is the better!
Search fora good background for your youtube thumbnail by searching for something like - hd backgrounds, simple backgrounds, Your subject of interest for video and wallpaper.. example call of duty ghost wallpaper, blue backgrounds (or whatever color you want your background to be)
For the best text in your thumbnails check out Cool Text - http://cooltext.com/
You can also get a lot of cool fonts from dafont.com - If you go this route you will have to add border on your text -

Make everything in your thumbnail like text and pictures very large! Leave a little bit of a border around the edges. Youtube chops them off a lot when showing your video in related video or on a website, social media, and etc..
