Whether you received a call or made one, at some point, the screen of your iPhone will turn off even if the call is still active. However, there are times when it doesn’t do that and if you’re trying to save battery, you would want the screen to turn off and you can do that by pressing the Side key.

Unfortunately, your iPhone is set to end the current call if you press it so you cannot really do that. But there is a setting under the Accessibility menu that allows you to press the power button without dropping the call.
