How to Rename Printer Name in Windows 10/11

This post will show you how to rename a printer in Windows 11/10. By default, whenever you install a printer, Windows 11/10 automatically set its name based on printer series, model number, and manufacturer.

If you ever feel the need to change the printer name, then it can be done using built-in options available in Windows 11/10. This post covers all those options with step-by-step instructions to rename a printer including the built-in virtual printer known as Microsoft Print to PDF. You can change the name of a Printer in Windows 11/10 using Settings, Control Panel, PowerShell, or Command Prompt.

Printers can be a pain to set up as doing so is never really all that cut and dry. You’ll likely need information that you didn’t even know you needed. This is more so true when setting a printer up on a network than in the home but in both situations, neither process involves giving the printer an easy to remember name.

On Windows 10, when you add a new printer, the installation process assigns a default name based on the manufacture name, series, and model number. Although this information should be descriptive enough to identify the printer, there are still plenty of reasons to change the name of the device to something different.

For example, if you print to multiple (of the same) printers in different locations, you may want to update the name to identify the device better. You're a network administrator, and you need to comply with your organization device naming convention policy. You recently installed a new printer with a different driver to make it work on Windows 10, and the printer now shows the wrong name, or you don't like the default name, and you want to use something different.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Huawei and Samsung.
