The sfc /scannow is the Command Prompt command used to run System File Checker.

There are several things you can do with the sfc scannow command, sfc /scannow is a common way to use the sfc command.

Sfc /scannow will scan all the Windows system files in your computer, like windows DLL files. When the System File Checker finds problems with any of these files, it will delete and replace the corrupt files it detects.

If some Windows functions aren't working or Windows crashes, use the System File Checker to scan Windows and restore your files. 

The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

System File Checker
In Windows 10/8/7/Vista, the System File Checker is part of the Windows Resource Protection, that protects registry keys and folders and critical system files. If it detects changes to a protected system file, the corrupt file is restored from a cached copy located in the Windows System32 folder.

You should run this utility first, before trying to do a System Restore. In the search box on the taskbar, type Command Prompt, and right-click or press and hold Command Prompt from the list of results. Select Run as administrator, and then select Yes. Now type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.
