Public folder has been around longer than Windows 10, and it’s a special setup more than a feature. The operating system includes the idea of a Public folder to make it easier to share files with other people who use the same PC and with users over a small network.
What’s Public folder on Windows
While you can always share a folder manually on your account, the Public folder is a special setup very easy to configure and allows anyone to share files without having to go through the hassle of setting up share and security permissions, and you can even let other users access the folder without requiring a password.
The Public folders are a convenient way to share files on your computer. You can share files in the Public folders with other people using the same computer and with people using other computers on your network. Any file or folder you put in a Public folder is automatically shared with the people who have access to your Public folders.
Windows comes with a set of folders which are designed to share your documents with other users. Documents you put in these folders are accessible by other users of your PC, and by other computers on your network. Public folder sharing is a useful and easy-to-use way to share your files, but they are disabled by default. Here is how to enable it.
Any file or folder you put in one of the public folders becomes available to other users who can access these folders. Out-of-the-box, Windows provides a special Public folder, which contains subfolders you can use to organize your documents, images, videos, music and so on. These folders doesn't come with any files. It is assumed that you or other users will add some data to them.
