Hi, this video shows you how to use Neodymium Magnets and the knocking technique to locate wall studs and also ceiling joists. If you want to put up a shelf or a television then you can get a good fixing by screwing straight into the stud. It is also useful if you want to mark out downlighters in the ceiling and do not want to drill/poke test holes everywhere. This will only work in buildings that have the plasterboard screwed (not nailed) into the wall studs and ceiling joists. I also test a lath and plaster wall / ceiling in an older house with a magnet without sucess.
This technique is only useful in a finished building where you don't want to have to repair damage caused by drilling test holes.
