When it comes to playing the Nintendo Switch, I am not a big fan of using the Joy-Cons. I think they are too small, the buttons are too close together, and the right Joy-Con is atrocious for playing in TV or Table Top mode. As such, I normally use Nintendo's Pro Controller when playing games on my television. Sometimes, however, I simply wanted more accurate feeling when playing Super Nintendo games. I recently tested out the Old Skool Digital Controller for the GameCube, which is designed to emulate the feel of Super Nintendo controllers. And that it hit me, the Retro Fighters Warrior wireless adapter is the perfect solution.

I have reviewed the Warrior on the channel previously, which you can check out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y79L3qOk9is, but it essentially allows you to connect Gamecube or NES and Super NES classic style controllers to other Bluetooth enabled devices, such as the Nintendo Switch. The Warrior itself features buttons that you may need but are missing from whatever controller you would plug into it. Home, screen capture, and even turbo are located on the face of the Warrior. I had my solution, now it's time to test it out.

One of the first issues you may run into with this setup is having to remap your buttons. Using A & Y to run and jump in Super Mario world just isn't right, it should be B & A. However, the B & A buttons are not mapped properly for this application, but thankfully a recent firmware update to the Switch allows you to change what buttons do what. After about 5 minutes of fiddling around and getting my buttons mapped as I wanted, I dove into one of my favorite games of all time, Super Mario world. I have to say, the performance was terrific! The D-Pad was responsive, and the face buttons worked exactly as they needed to, once remapped of course. I tested other Super NES and NES online games, all of them work exactly as they should.

What about other 2D games on the Switch? Well, SonicMania worked perfectly using this controller without any lag or latency issues. I tried Joe and Mac from the Johnny arcade collection, & also worked perfectly. Pretty much any 2D style game works exactly as I would have expected with this combination.

I'm really not surprised the Warrior worked as well as it did here with the Old Skool Digital Gamepad. Every controller I have ever used with the Warrior has worked precisely as it should. The fact that the turbo buttons work exactly as they should when activated is awesome, and the button mapping now makes this exceptionally better than what it was before. I know there is the GBro's Adapter from 8BitDo, but me personally, I prefer the Warrior and I think you will too.
