In this #YouTube #Short episode, we show you a Famicom Disk System we had repaired and how it works with our HDMI modded NES top loader.

I love collecting import games, it's one of my favorite aspects of the hobby. I don't know if it goes back to my love of Japanese RC cars, but I have always had a fascination with imported video games. In the past, I have shown my Sharp Famicom Twin Turbo which plays both Famicom games and Famicom Disk System games. The problem with this system is that it only outputs composite video. While I can could RGB Mod this system or go through my RetroTink2x Pro and improve the video signal, it's still looks okay at best. I have always wanted to pick up a standalone Famicom Disk System to use with my HDMI modded NES top loader, and I've now done just that.

This Famicom Disk System was, externally, in great shape. Internally, however, it needed a lot of repair work. I had to replace the belt, which thankfully I had a number of spares. I also had to clean the magnetic head, repair the Molex connector that plugged into the drive itself, and adjust the head speed to eliminate the dreaded error 22 message. After 3 to 4 hours of screwing around with it, I was finally able to get it working as it should, and it is a glorious thing.

One thing of note, the NES does not support expansion audio, meaning I don't get all of the audio quality that the original Famicom had. I have already reached out to the amazing Voultar, as he has an expansion audio mod that he has developed which I hope to eventually add to my system. So as of right now, some of the audio in Doki Doki Panic for example does not play through. We will get there!

UPDATE:
I dug into the menu settings of the HDMI Mod from Kevtris and discovered that the mod kit itself can produce Famicom Audio! I have tested it and it sounds AMAZING!!!

I was almost to the point of giving up on restoring this system, but I am too stubborn and hard-headed to just walk away. I am glad that I stuck with it, as I have always wanted to have one of these systems in my collection. Now that it is here, I fully expect to play a ton more Famicom Disk System games, and probably collect more as well.
