A James Bond style mission to sneak in and steal a Russian science station from the middle of the Arctic ice. This is Skyhook: Operation Coldfeet.
May 1961. A U.S. naval aircraft conducting an aeromagnetic survey over the Arctic Ocean spots a Soviet research station on the ice pack below. This was North Pole 9, one in a series of mysterious scientific colonies built by the Soviet government to further their exploration of the remote arctic. The purpose of these stations was unknown at the time, and the prospect of infiltrating one was immediately intriguing to U.S. intelligence.
The challenge would be how to access NP 9, as it was buried too far into the impenetrable Arctic ice to reach by boat or helicopter. Landing an airplane on the unstable icepack was out of the question. The CIA, however, was undeterred. It would take a year of planning and extreme training to launch one of the agency’s most daring missions of the Cold War. Skyhook: Operation Coldfeet.
