It's no secret that life as a content creator in the year 2022 is a constant fight against the algorithms.

Back in the old days of local music, bands didn't have to fight algorithms.

They got their music out with word of mouth, in store appearances, handbills, and ZINES.

Zines are a self published form of media that allows the public to cheap and easily create tangible content that is easily transferred from one person to another.

Zines and associated media were a major part of the success of local bands in the days before MySpace.

In this day and age, I am putting forth the idea that local bands CAN build real reliable fanbases using media such as this, and in a more impactful way than would ever be possible on social media.

Afterall, what's the point of having 50k followers if the algorithm only shows you to 25. You're far better off creating impactful media that you physically put into the hands of your potential fans.

A better connection between the artist and the audience is formed. A memory and a lasting connection is possible in the exchange between a creator and someone in the real world that just is not possible on the internet. A kind of memory is formed. Something magickal happens.

I couldn't find links to any local zines quite yet but you're welcome to join the IndieMO Discord Server. Here, we will discuss local music, zines, and show booking. If you're a SWMO content creator or band, this is the group for you to connect with likeminded people. https://discord.gg/37WsvnFeWd
