HTC Vive Steam VR Game - Crystal Rift by Psytec Games
Coming soon to HTC Vive and other VR platforms. Crystal Rift is a VR dungeon-crawler, in true first person perspective. Includes Virtual Reality support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, with Sony Morpheus, Windows PC, Apple OSX, Unix ports coming soon.
There were a good chunk of games on the show floor peddling their wares through VR, but what we can say for crystal rift is that all four of their demo setups were constantly in use, and there was a sizeable queue vying to have a play.
Over the years we've had hands-on time with both the Oculus Rift DK one and two, along with the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR, and what we found as a falling point is the sometimes modeled display due to the lower definition and the less than optimal refresh time. And while Gear VR has a 2560 x 1440 display, it can only go as fast as 60 FPS. None of that on the Steam HTC Vive, as it boasts a 1200 x 1080p pixel-per-eye display, and offers a smooth 90 fps. The Steam VR HTC Vive we used was the development kit, but they could honestly sell it as is. Crystal Rift made excellent use of this cracking piece of kit, and gave an immersive experience. During a couple of its jump scare moments, and staff were on hand to hold players up!
Crystal rift itself is a great proof of concept, and could be the stepping stone that is needed to get the mainstream on-board with what we consider a totally new platform. The game itself is currently in early access , and the demo we played was around 15 minutes long, with much more to be seen in the final release. Along with an easy to master user map building tool, this is certainly one to keep your eye on for the future.
We were told that support will be forthcoming across all VR platforms, as well as (non VR) support. However, the setup we played with was what is needed to get the full experience.
