How to Benchmark a Retro Gaming PC - 3DFX Voodoo 2 SLI 3DMark Benchmarks
Hello retro PC builders, retro gaming enthusiasts. Thanks for your patience and welcome to my guide to benchmarking your old gaming PC! At current I am unable to capture the VGA output from the back of my retro PC, so we’re filming the screen here with a GoPro Hero Black, at 1080p so the capture quality is still decent.
In this retro benchmark video, we’re going to be benching the performance of the Voodoo 2s in SLI under Windows 98. To do this we’re first running FutureMark’s 3DMark99. We’re also going to be running 3DFX’s WizMark as well as the CPU benchmark TestCPU. Finally we’ll be running ArchMark and at the end I’ll play a little bit of the original Half Life with all settings at max.
3DMark99 tests the Voodoo 3D Accelerator cards, keeping all the other settings at the standard. The benchmark runs through various different tests for textures, geometry and other number-crunching calculations.
When it comes to benchmarking a Windows 98 retro gaming PC like mine, there’s a wealth of information out there. Both the VOGONS forums and Google helped me to find exhaustive lists of programs which were written in the 90s to benchmark the old PCs of the time. To me, the obvious go-tos were the ones I recognised from back in my day, but I’ve included the complete lists of retro benchmarking programs below. Some of the more interesting benchmarks are ClothSim, GlideClock and GLTree, but I kept them out as they didn’t seem relevant to this video.
