The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic used to measure a country's overall achievement in its social and economic dimensions. It was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of their Human Development Reports. HDI assesses three key dimensions of human development: life expectancy, education, and standard of living.

Life expectancy at birth reflects a country's ability to provide a healthy and long life for its citizens. The education component is measured by both the average years of schooling for adults and the expected years of schooling for children. The standard of living is evaluated using Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), which helps assess the average income and economic well-being of a population.

The HDI is expressed as a value between 0 and 1, where higher values indicate higher human development. Countries are categorized into four levels: very high, high, medium, and low human development. While the HDI offers a useful snapshot of development, it does not account for inequalities, poverty, or other qualitative aspects of development like human rights or environmental sustainability. Therefore, while informative, it is often complemented by other indices to provide a fuller picture of a country's progress.
