22The Cincinnati Reds and right-hander Hunter Greene agreed to a six-year, $53 million contract extension through the 2028 season, the team announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:
The contract is guaranteed through the 2028 season and includes a $21 million club option, with a $2 million buyout for 2029, per the Reds. The deal could be worth in excess of $95 million overall with the option and incentives, according to sources briefed on the deal.
Greene was pulled from his fourth start of the year Monday after suffering a right tibia contusion on a comebacker against Tampa Bay.
The No. 2 pick in the 2017 MLB Draft and Cincinnati’s Opening Day starter this season had a 5.14 ERA and 1.643 WHIP heading into thec matchup.
Greene posted a 4.44 ERA and 1.210 WHIP across 24 starts in his rookie season.
