Hyper Dyne: Side Arms Special - Before Christ | PC-Engine playthrough | Real hardware
Hyper Dyne Side Arms Special is a disc that contains 2 versions of Hyperdyne - Standard, and Before Christ.
They are similar looking games but have enough core differences to make them stand apart.
Standard mode seems like a newer version (although I don’t think they had separate releases). Button I shoots to the left, while button II shoots to the right. This is a cool concept so you can whiz around the screen and deal with enemies you missed from the front. This also makes you have to watch out for enemies that come from all sides of the screen and you can easily get caught out.
I actually forgot that you could shoot left on some playthroughs which made the game incredibly hard.
BEFORE CHRIST
This is one of the hardest games I have ever completed.
In Before Christ mode. The differences in this game are instantly apparent. For starters it looks more basic, as if it was an 8-bit predecessor to a 16-bit game. You can hold the fire button to charge a shot.
There are less weapons to acquire but instead of shooting the power ups, you have to wait for it to cycle to the weapon you want. This means you have to concentrate a lot on picking it up at the correct time and can often kill yourself because it is vital to collect every power up to power it up for the end of the level. If you get hit once, you die and have to start the level again with zero power ups. Even if you compete the level, the next level will strip you of power ups.
The levels are really intense due to the one hit kill rule. You can get a checkpoint right before a boss so you can get a few goes but if you continue, you have to start the level again.
The bosses are all incredibly hard. It took me ages to work out how to do the 3rd level boss. I couldn’t find a tactic and was getting destroyed straight away and losing all my lives. In the end, I had to play this game on an emulator and save before each boss so I could practice them over and over before my real run.
I realised that every boss must be defeated using the Charge shot and you have to find a very tight opening post to get a hit. Even when you know how to get it, it is still very hard to get one hit in. Or so I thought until I got to the end of the game and there is a boss rush where you have to fight all the bosses, plus a new boss. I could not for the life of me figure out how to beat him as the hits are relentless. I then realised that it could get hit with normal weapons. This changed the game entirely for me and made a lot of bosses a lot easier. I still found a great way to cheese this boss and I didn’t even need good weapons. But I did need a good weapon for the final boss. The weapon carries over for the first time, but you don’t get any additional armour if you collected any previously. One hit, and its basically game over, even if you have lots of lives left.
This game is good but restarting the levels and relentless bosses can make it tiresome. But once I got good at it and completed it, wow, what a feeling.
