Hyper Lode Runner is a game for the Game Boy, developed by Tose and published by Bandai. It was released in Japan in September 1989 and worldwide in February 1990. The game is a platform puzzle that builds upon the original “Lode Runner” from 1983, featuring a scrolling playfield instead of single-screen levels.
The game received mixed reviews, with some praising its challenging gameplay and others critiquing its high difficulty level. For instance, the magazine Total! described it as the “toughest [Game Boy] cart to date by far” due to its “incredibly hard” difficulty. Meanwhile, Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a low score, finding little enjoyment in what they considered an unremarkable port of the original title. In a retrospective review, Nintendo Life found the game enjoyable but noted the difficulty was off-putting, especially with the lack of a save function for the level editor.
