Devil Kings (2005) is a hack-and-slash action game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2. Known as Sengoku Basara in Japan, the game takes place in a stylized version of Japan's Sengoku (Warring States) period but with significant fictionalization. Players control one of several warlords, each with unique weapons, abilities, and combat styles, as they battle across various stages filled with enemy soldiers and bosses.
The gameplay focuses on fast-paced combat, similar to Dynasty Warriors, with players using combo attacks, special moves, and power-ups to defeat waves of enemies. The goal is to conquer enemy strongholds and eventually unite Japan by defeating rival warlords.
To better suit Western audiences, the North American release Devil Kings featured significant changes from the original Japanese version, including renamed characters, altered storylines, and reduced historical references, giving it more of a generic fantasy theme. Despite these changes, the game retains the over-the-top, high-energy action and distinct character personalities that became trademarks of the series.
While the game received mixed reviews for its repetitive gameplay and deviations from historical accuracy, its fast combat and flashy attacks garnered a fanbase, especially among players looking for arcade-style action.
