Opening the gates to the city of Arx from the other side and not letting the guard get to it's location to welcome the player results in you not being able to do anything, except exiting the game via Alt+F4. The question is, can you access the city without going through that gate? The answer is yes, you need the trolls to clear the path for you. And you can do that by giving their idol back even if you haven't picked up that mission yet.
