Ice Makers delete 4, 8, or 20 kDTU/s depending on how you use them [Oxygen Not Included]
Ice Makers are weird you guys.
The reason we got a whopping 60 kDTU/s heat generation rate in our previous test was that there is a hidden modifier in the game which gives ice makers 1/5th of the heat capacity they are normally supposed to have. In actuality, the ice maker was only being heated up by 12 kDTU.
But wait you say-- aren't Ice Makers supposed to produce 16 kDTU? Ah, but here is where it gets really interesting. Only 12 of the 16 kDTU produced by the Ice Maker is transferred to the building. The rest is "Excess Heat" which is transferred to the buildings surroundings. And when we ran the test in a vacuum, that excess heat never occurred because there was nothing to transfer to.
Also interesting-- it doesn't look like the excess heat gets applied in full force to its surroundings. When we re-ran the test with the Ice Makers in a puddle of 20 C water, the excess heat was only 1400 DTU/s.
So, depending on conditions, an Ice Maker will delete 4-8 kDTU/s.
But there's also the opportunity, if one wants, to run the Ice Maker in a complete vacuum until it either melts itself or you deconstruct it, and then you can use the materials you get out of deconstructing/melting the Ice Maker to build something else, which will reset its temperature to 40 C. And using this exploit you can get up to 20 kDTU of cooling per second out of an Ice Maker.
Bottom line: in normal conditions, Ice Makers delete 4 kDTU/s of heat.
