Magnetic coupling often seems to be mysterious and hard to quantify. This presentation shows how to model it, measure it and use it in circuit analysis and simulation. It is well-known that the coupling coefficient between two windings must be between -1 and 1. The presentation discusses an additional constraint for three or more coupled windings that is required to ensure that the mathematical description is passive. Not applying this constraint leads to non-convergence in circuit simulations.
