Illusion of Gaia (01)

So I was recommended this game to play as a good, short RPG I could relax to. Certainly seems to fit that description as long as you're not fighting bosses. The Incan Ruins boss frustrates me because that bouncing fireball attack seems to be random in how it moves, that there's no (obvious) way to manipulate it, and it makes the boss much harder for me than it really should be (and this is the FIRST boss of the game).
Also, I have no idea how you're supposed to advance the raft drifting segments that don't ask you to do a specific thing (like eat the leg of yak or talk to Kara a few times), whether it's based on time or by the number of movements made.
