Towns in Germany which have hosted the British Army since 1945 will certainly feel the effects of the rebasing plans.

It is not only local economies that will suffer, but also the social links that were established which saw many British soldiers marrying into the local community.

At Bergen-Hohne Garrison 70 years of British Military presence will end in 2015. It will mean some 5,000 to 6,000 personnel and their families and civilian workers will leave this part of Germany. It is going to have a big effect on the local community.

Withdrawing from Germany will involve moving 34,000 personnel and their families, 11 000 vehicles and equipment and closing and handing back 26 barracks and more than 10,000 homes.

One man who does not underestimate the task ahead is Peter Davies. The retired Lt Colonel has already closed one garrison and is now managing the drawdown of Rhine Garrison near Moenchengladbach.
