Final Fantasy VII’s 1998 PC release wasn’t quite as straightforward a port as you might have assumed, with Square battling itself to try and mangle something into shape for a number of reasons. Intended as a short mention in a previous video, this instead turned into a whole topic by itself because it’s just so bloody interesting and weird that a game as important as Final Fantasy VII might have had to go through so much nonsense, and that Square Enix today still feels the impact from its decisions in the 90s and 00s.

The rabbit hole went deeper than I assumed. Here’s the sources used for this video:

The good MIDI files for the PC game are here, though I still prefer the PS1 versions: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B9wPT-tabaAffmlHaHpVcVRSWkZaQnJYakJaWWdnSXB2d0U5alRIbm9aWExETk5FUm0xTjQ

Music:Why yes, it’s the PC MIDI soundtrack from Final Fantasy VII (which was patched out of the PC2012/Steam versions), released by Square/Square-Enix and composed by Nobuo Uematsu
