I think Insector X could be a contender for the question of "What's a good shmup to start with?"
It is fun, kinda short, teaches the basics and not super challenging but not exactly free for a new player.
The blue spray can shots are definitely the way to go, you just have to get passed the funky ring laser.
Once you fully power up your main and secondary shots you get good screen control and can defeat a lot of enemies before the fill the screen with bullets. The main selling point though is the stage 2 music and the funny propeller hat the character wears.
