I love rogue-lites, souls-like, and Metroidvania games, and as much as those are “buzzwords” in the gaming community as far as journalists and developers are concerned, Dead Cells certainly lives up to those descriptors. It has the hard and punishing gameplay of a Souls game combined with the power-ups, secrets and map exploration of a Metroidvania game all wrapped up in a procedurally generated rogue-lite shell of a game. One of the things I love the most about Dead Cells is it gives me the same satisfaction I got from beating Dark Souls where once you learn all the enemy patterns and learn the controls, you can’t blame RNG or the game for you getting hit or losing, you can only blame yourself. The “Brutal Update” lives up to it’s name, adding in new mechanics, new enemies and new areas, as well as reworking the way power-up scrolls work and reworking shields and weapons. The “Foundry Update” adds Boss Cells, giving you a way of increasing the difficulty of the game as well as the Foundry: a place to spend excess cells in order to make your weapons better at a base level. It also adds in a new system, “Mutations,” which allow you to customize your runs a little bit more based on your playstyle and weapons.
