Interior - The Mimic (Uni Project Check Description)
This is an interior space I set out to design as part of one of my projects for my first semester at University. The goal was to build it inspired by a particular game of my choosing, so I picked Control (2019).
I enjoyed the way Control used brutalism, an architectural style that already had a repressive and an almost otherworldly feel to it, and turned it into a fast paced and exciting sandbox for the player to explore.
One quote that kept ringing through my head whilst I was building this interior; was from The Art Of Making Video Games, “Much of Controls power lies in the way it establishes expectations, with mundane bureaucratic spaces, and then breaks them”
This is the approach I tried to take when constructing the layout of the environment, I needed it to feel familiar but also make the player feel a certain unease.
When it came to having two versions of the same space, that idea was born out of what the Federal Bureau of Control actually does, they observe and control AWEs (Altered World Events).
The office space seems so to be constructed around observation of a copy, a Mimic, that exists in a dark space between our world and its own, it has tried to copy the office, but its attempts are nonsensical and chaotic.
Once I had built the environment layout itself, I then wanted to replicate the satirical view of office life found in Control such as with the “encouraging” workplace posters that just give the office an unsettling, allost friendly feeling.
