Interview with deafblind chess player Carsten Thorup
Carsten Thorup from Denmark cannot see or hear, but he loves to play chess and is a big fan of Magnus Carlsen. In December 2021, along with an assistant and an interpreter, he came all the way to Dubai to enjoy the experience of the world championship match first-hand and express his support to his favourite player. This is when this interview was filmed.
For Carsten, chess is a game he can enjoy using his computer with a braille display. "Getting updates from the world of chess and following elite chess players is something I love," he says.
Recognizing the importance of competitions for people with disabilities, FIDE organized the first-ever Online Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities in 2020. In the summer of 2022, competition for the disabled will become a part of the traditional Chess Olympiad for the first time ever. It will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk from 19-26 July. Thirty federations were selected to participate based on the rating system, and each team will be made up of 4 players (3 men and at least one woman) and 1 reserve.
