The campaign mode is a fun mix between base building, action RPG, and tower defense where you work to complete a large rift in your headquarters map. To do this you will explore several different biomes to research new tech needed to complete the project and to survive. It's a good mix between base building and shoot em up gameplay. Not too hard, but still enough to get you thinking. I enjoy it :)
