Opening cinematics from the space combat simulation, TIE Fighter, originally released for MS-DOS computers in 1994. It was notable for being the first game in the Star Wars universe that featured the perspective of "the bad guys." TIE Fighter takes place in-between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

TIE Fighter ran on an updated engine featuring 3d polygons and advanced gouraud shading. It also featured additional spacecraft features and other pilotable spacecraft not seen in X-Wing. As with X-Wing, it received numerous re-releases, starting with the Collectors CD in 1995, which featured high-res SVGA graphics, enhanced cutscenes, and numerous additional voice-overs. It also contained all previously-released expansions and a brand-new expansion. It was re-released again in 1998 with 3D hardware accelerated graphics and texture mapping, in addition to CD audio instead of the iMUSE system.

TIE Fighter was another commercial hit that greatly outperformed expectations. It was a best-seller in 1994 and went on to become #1 of the Top 50 Best Games of All Time in PC Gamer magazine.
