This is a sample from Make Cel Shaded 2d Game Art with Krita, a course that'll show you how to design characters based on an existing art direction (thanks to David Revoy's open webcomic Pepper and Carrot), but also to achieve a convincing cartoon art style!
This lighting tutorial is here to help you get started. Before we can simplify a character to get that cel shaded look, we need to understand how light and shadows work, at least in a simple way. The basics are: everything that's facing light is brighter, everything that faces away from light is in the shadow, and should be darker. The video will explain a bit more.
