Fresh Meat:
The Purge is, without a doubt, one of the most successful genre franchises out there. A shocking success when the original was released in 2013, we have since seen from series creator James DeMonaco two follow up films – The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. Both starred Captain America star and fan favorite Frank Grillo. While films like The Purge seem like the gift that keeps on giving, Grillo spoke with Collider’s own Christina Radish about his future with the franchise and indicated that his time may be done.
Trailers for two new and vastly different genre films made their way online this week, first being Clinical, a new Netflix original film, which hits the streaming platform out of nowhere this Friday, January 15. Clinical is the story of a psychologist’s horrifying encounter with a disturbed young patient and the aftermath that causes her to question her own sanity.
Next is what is sure to be the best Polish mermaid horror musical comedy of the year, The Lure. According to director Agnieszka Smoczynska, The Lure is the story of two teenage mermaids who become the city nightclub sensation. She describes the movie as “not timid and innocent,” and states “my mermaids feed themselves with human hearts.”
While some fans were disappointed at the news that visionary director Guillermo del Toro would not be returning to the directors chair for the sequel to Pacific Rim, many were excited to hear that the movie had a greenlight in the first place and would star Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega. del Toro, who is staying on board as a producer, had previously assured fans that there would be many familiar faces back for the sequel, titled Pacific Rim: Uprising. Now that production has begun, cinematographer Dan Mindel took to Instagram to share the news that Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, and Charlie Day would return.
Are you ready for him? Tonight, here in Los Angeles, Collider Nightmares will present a screening of the new thriller, The Bye Bye Man. And, to get you even more excited for the event and the movie, which comes out this Friday, Clarke had a chat with the star himself, Doug Jones, and director Stacy Title about what makes The Bye Bye Man such a scary boogeyman. Take a look!
What’s In The Box?!:
On Sunday during the Golden Globes, the first trailer at the Netflix horror-comedy series Santa Clarita Diet starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant premiered. In it, Barrymore shares the secret of her stunning looks: eating people! According to Deadline, “Olyphant and Barrymore star as husband and wife realtors Joel and Sheila in the dark comedy. They’re leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.” Santa Clarita Diet premieres on Netflix on Friday, February 3.
Finally, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, Hulu dropped the first teaser for their new thriller, The Handmaid’s Tale starring Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss. Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood.
