The IOTA network uses a system called Tangle, which is a data structure designed for scalability and efficiency. The structure itself forms a directed acyclic graph, or DAG, where each new block of transactions added to the network is attached to multiple older blocks. This creates a web of data that branches out. In comparison, a traditional blockchain can only add one block of data at a time to its growing chain. This data structure creates a bottleneck, and Tangle was designed to overcome this bottleneck with a structure that allows multiple blocks to be added in parallel.
